This wine comes out of Coonawarra, in the Southeastern portion of South Australia. Known for making dry red table wines generally, the cool climate there has allowed a wine industry to blossom since the 1890s. The Balnaves family emigrated from Paisley, Scotland in the 1850’s to South Australia and settled on the terra rosso soils of Coonawarra, where they established the family vineyard in 1975. The family’s goal is to create wines with complexity, structure, and ageability. Most of their lineup is, however, best consumed once it has been cellared for a few years. The Cab, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are all blended, then matured in French Oak for 14 months. The famous Terra Rosso soil that gives the Balnaves wines such elegance and complexity is a 16 km long and 2 km wide strip of dark red clay that goes about a meter deep, and under it is a ridge of limestone that raises this strip above the swampy lands that border it on both sides. Limestone generally has significant water retention properties, which allows the vines to have a supplementary supply of water, and also help manage potential frost damage. This in combination with the growth of Eucalyptus in Coonawarra gives the wines immense complexity and flavor. On the nose, there are hints of Mulberry, Blackberry, Licorice, Smoked Coffee Beans, and Pipe Tobacco. On the palate, black fruit, dried herbs, distinct spice, and Eucalyptus.
