The Azienda Agricola Fay was founded in 1973 by Sandro Fay who, starting from a small family-run wine producing business, decided to expand the estate’s activities. In 1971 on the winery’s premises in San Giacomo di Teglio, the winery was constructed and in the following years the vineyards were extended by incorporating several additional plots of land. Since 1998, Sandro has been primarily operated by Sandro's children- Marco and Elena who are committed to promoting single their vineyards with different soils and altitudes to produce wines with distinctive characteristics. Valtellina is the biggest mountain vineyard terraced area in Italy. The native grape variety grown there is Nebbiolo, or local name Chiavennasca. The vines are grown at an altitude between 350 and 900 meters on primarily sand and silty soils. Azienda Sandro Fay organically farms 14 hectares. This wine is 90% Nebbiolo blended with 10% Merlot, Brugnola, Rossola & Pignola. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks, yielding a completely approachable version of Nebbiolo with excellent structure without the hard grip of a youthful version from, say, Barbaresco or Barolo. Rich dark berry fruit along with some old-world earth are highlighted throughout.
