As the weather changes, there is a shift in what we are drawn to share with friends and family; or to pair with a good book and some cheese. There are a number of great warm weather wines from all over the world with prices to fit all of our budgets. That's where Godello comes in. Godello is a white grape varietal from Northwest Spain where it is largely grown in the regions of Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo and Monterrei.
The Northwest region of Spain is much cooler than the rest of the country and as a result, specializes in producing unique and zesty white wines. Godello is often likened to white Burgundy but with rich and floral notes of grapefruit, lemon, wet stone and a touch of saline. Godello, like many other quality wines from smaller wine regions with little advertisement and widespread notoriety, is a great value buy. With a price range of $20-25, Godello is a great option for everyday consumption. This wine is best enjoyed, similar to other white wines, lightly chilled, but not ice cold. As far as food pairings go, seafood is an obvious match, especially heartier choices like lobster, scallops, and crab. Lighter fare such as salads, vegetables, and lighter chicken dishes also pair well.
So the next time that you make a break for some new summer grapes, grab a fresh bottle of Godello, and tell us what you think!
