With close to 90 different appellations, Maison Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating array of Burgundy terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations. Holding 73 hectares (182.5 acres), the Joseph Drouhin Domaine is one of the largest estates in the region -- it owns vineyards in all of Burgundy: Chablis (38 hectares), Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, (32 hectares), Côte Chalonnaise (3 hectares). It is comprised of a majority of Premier and Grand Crus, planted with the two Burgundian grape varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Today the fourth generation of the Drouhin family still run the operation and have adopted the biodynamic approach. Only natural products are used in the vineyards and all procedures show the utmost respect for the soil, the vine and the environment. Once at the winery, the grapes are pressed slowly, then the wine is aged in French Oak barrels (25% new) for 12 months. This Chardonnay is a wine of great finesse -- the color is pure and bright, and the aromas evoke trees in bloom and white peach flesh. On the palate, there is a sensation of fresh silkiness, with flavors of soft apricot and limestone. Long and persistent in the finish, ending on flavors both floral and fruity.
