G.B. Burlotto Langhe Freisa 2016

During his seventy-seven years as a winemaker (1850-1927), Giovan Battista Burlotto’s accomplishments were rivaled only by those of Biondi-Santi and Vega-Sicilia, as G.B. achieved superstardom in a world dominated by French wines. Today, Burlotto has re-emerged as one of Piedmont’s great small producers, thanks to the extraordinary work of the current management team: Giovan’s great-nice Marina manages the winery, her husband Giuseppe oversees the vineyards, and their son Fabio Alessandria brings her uncompromising vision to the winemaking process. Burlotto owns 15 hectares of land near the Tanaro river in Verduno, the northernmost estate in Barolo. In the cellar Fabio works traditionally—crushing by foot is a not-uncommon practice, indigenous yeast is almost exclusively employed in the winemaking, punchdowns and destemming are done largely by hand. The estate’s meticulous work in the vineyards and in the cellar have enabled the Burlotto family to carry on the excellence established over a hundred years ago by Giovan, producing elegant, profound wines now considered among the very finest in Piedmont.

Burlotto’s Freisa is a rich, firm red, at once paying homage to its Nebbiolo parent with its clove-and-liquorice notes, but creating its own distinct identity by way of further notes of savory cooking spices, blue fruits, and ground pink peppercorns. Brisk acidity, dry finish. Drink now-2022.
