La Kiuva is a village cooperative within the Vallee d’Aosta, a small, mountainous autonomous region located north and west of Piedmont, in the very shadow of the Alps. Locals there grow their own clone of Piemontese Nebbiolo, which they call Picatendro, and which develops its own uniquely northern character in this cold Alpine enclave. La Kiuva was established in 1975, produced its first vintage in 1979, and today consists of 60 growers who own a total of 25 hectares of vines. Each grower tends to their own small plot while the cooperative’s agronomist oversees their efforts to ensure quality from one vintage to the next. The DOC of Arnad-Montjovet is located in Aosta’s Lower Valley growing area, where the climate is more typically continental—despite cold nights and occasional blasts of cold air sweeping down from the Alps, summers are generally warm and dry, lending poignancy and balance to the Picatendro grown there.

75% Picatendro, 25% field blend of autochthonous Aostan varieties (primarily Gros Vien, Neyret, Cornalin, Fumin). Precise and structured, yellow and black cherry, savory spices, cranberry. Bright and dry through to the back, graphite notes lending a clean finish that pays homage to the dominant grape’s Piemontese heritage but presents a profile unmistakably its own. Drink now-2022.
