Educated Guess Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is both the first release and the flagship wine of the Roots Run Deep Winery, founded in 2005 by Mark Albrecht. With over 20 years in the wine industry spanning retail, restaurants, distribution and now winery operation, Mark operates under the belief that great wines can be affordable. With veteran winemaker Barry Gnekow, Albrecht believes that a good Napa Cab doesn’t have to cost $50 or $100. By not owning any vineyards, Roots Run Deep is able to pass on all the savings to the customer by purchasing grapes from famous Napa sites like Oak Knoll, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Carneros. Most of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from the Beckstoffer Vineyards in Rutherford, Bettinelli, and Laird Family Vineyards. The fruit is fermented, then spends 12 months in French Oak, from which the wine derives a toasty, chocolatey finish. Aromas and flavors of rich cherry fruit, and blackberry, with a hint of mocha on the finish. 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. The label art shows 5 real chemical equations involved in wine making, such as sulfide production during fermentation, and the conversion of sucrose into glucose and fructose. The wine bears the name Educated Guess as a mark of honesty -- Albrecht and Gnekow both freely admit that although one may use all the science, theory, and evidence available, wineries and vineyard owners everywhere are ultimately just making their best educated guess regarding when to pick, how to prune, what vessels to use, and when to release their wines.
