Founded in 1883, Wente Vineyards holds the distinction of being the country’s oldest, continuously-operated family owned winery. 2018 marks the winery’s 135th Anniversary. It all started with Carl H. Wente, a German immigrant who moved to the Livermore Valley and purchased 47 acres of property, subsequently building a winery. In 1933, he and second generation winegrower Herman Wente released the nation’s first varietally labelled Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. Now, the fifth generation of Wente wine growers have joined the family business and continue to release world class varietal wines. The fruit for this wine comes from the estate Southern Hills vineyard, and is expressive of the gravelly alluvial fans of the Livermore Valley. It carries aromatics of bay leaf and dried cranberry, with crushed black pepper and cassis. The final blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 5% Petit Sirah, 5% Malbec, 2% Tempranillo. Each component was individually fermented, then the blend was aged for 16 months in a combination of stainless steel, French, Eastern European, and neutral oak barrels.
