Cain Five "Spring Mountain District", 2012

125.00

In 1980, Jerry and Joyce Cain purchased 550 acres, part of the historic McCormick Ranch, on Spring Mountain. Their vision was to develop a mountain vineyard dedicated to the classical blend of varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. As the project was coming into focus, the Cains were joined by Jim and Nancy Meadlock who became partners at the beginning of 1986, and, since the retirement of the Cains in 1991, have carried on as sole owners. 2012 was the first and possibly the best in a series of three excellent vintages that rival the best of the last three decades. Growing conditions were just about ideal, and the vines responded beautifully with just the right amount of grapes that they were able to bring to just the right degree of ripeness at just the right moment. The wine drinks beautifully in its youth. Round, plump, juicy, savory, and yes, even fruity. This is a very complex wine that will reward a long meal as it develops in the glass. Today, to enjoy this wine in its optimal state, pour it into a carafe or decanter, give it some air and this sleepy giant will come to life! 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec. Black Cherry, hints of fresh green leaves, tobacco, spice. Full bodied, with a lengthy finish.
