The story of the Hall family is the story of the entrepreneurial spirit and matching history with modernity. Founders Kathryn and Craig Hall both have storied backgrounds, and today share their passion for high quality wine with the world. Kathryn started out as an assistant city attorney for Berkeley, the moved on to develop one of the nation’s first and largest affirmative action programs for Safeway. After co-founding the North Texas Food Bank and serving on both the National Advisory Council for Violence Against Women and the U.S. House of Representatives Hunger Advisory Committee, Kathryn served as US Ambassador to Austria from 1997-2001. The dream for Hall Wines was to showcase fine wine alongside modern art and architecture -- at the core of Hall Wines is inspiration for the senses. The Halls bought the 33 acre historic St. Helena Bergfeld Winery (once home of the Napa Valley Co-Op!) in 2003 and set about turning it into one of Napa’s destination wineries. All restoration work on the 1885 Bergfeld Winery was finished by 2013, including a state-of-the-art gravity flow winemaking facility; the winery was the first in California to be LEED certified. The Halls source from more than 500 acres of Bordeaux varietals -- Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc -- from over 70 different vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Santa Barbara counties, including 150 acres of their own certified organic estate fruit. Under the careful direction of Director of Vineyard Operation Don Munk, all vineyards practice small vine farming and hand harvesting. This Merlot is a complex blend of several vineyards, incorporating fruit from the estate vineyards as well. As Merlot tends to ripen early, they selected fruit from cooler vineyard sites to enhance the vibrant and expressive character of this finicky variety. Plush and full of richly spiced flavors of dark cherry, blackberry and plum tart, supported by elegant, medium-grained tannins.
