Shafer Vineyards traces its beginnings to 1972 when John Shafer left a 23-year career in the publishing industry and, with his family, moved to the Napa Valley to pursue a second career in wine. After purchasing a 210-acre estate in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District, the Shafer family faced the arduous task of replanting the existing vineyards, which dated to the 1920s, and terracing the steep and rocky hillsides, eventually expanding vineyard acreage to its current 50 acres. New vineyards have been added over the years, with acreage acquired in the Oak Knoll, Stags Leap and Carneros districts, bringing the total Shafer vineyard acreage to over 200 acres. Winery facilities have been expanded and extensive caves carved into the hillside for aging wine. Early on each season the vineyard team prunes any weaker fruit leaving only the best on the vine, ensuring that the wine exhibits lush, ripe, mouthfilling flavors that are true to varietal character. While this wine is officially designated with the Napa Valley appellation, its fruit is sourced from within just a three-mile radius in the Valley's cooler southern end. Half the fruit for this Merlot comes from a hilly Shafer-owned vineyard located about a quarter mile due south of Stags Leap District. The remainder is cultivated within Stags Leap District by growers the Shafer family has worked with closely for years.

This second vintage of TD-9 offers bright, energetic aromas and flavors of red plum, raspberry, strawberry, spice box, exotic fruit, and red licorice. The momentum of all this enticing fruit, along with ripe tannins, is carried through to a long, tantalizing, feast of a finish.
