Named one of Wine & Spirits Magazine's top 100 wineries of 2009, Andrew Rich Wines has been crafting distinctive wines in Oregon's Willamette Valley since 1995. Along with Pinot Noir, Rhône Valley varietals from the Columbia Valley take pride of place. Andrew Rich, whose training includes stints in Burgundy and time at Bonny Doony, began producing wines in 1995. Today he makes wine in the state-of-the-art Carlton Winemakers Studio, the nation's first "green" cooperative winemaking facility which promises to be an archetype for Oregon's wine industry. For this vintage, farming was meticulous and sorting was ruthless, and what resulted were Pinots that are indisputably ripe in character, but on a lighter frame, with vibrant acidity, moderate alcohol, and soft tannins. Prelude is very approachable, but it will benefit from a little air to encourage its sweet and supple mid-palate. Aromas and flavors are more savory than purely fruity, with lively hints of blood orange, cranberry, and dried flowers. Vineyard sources are: Beacon Hill, Thistle, Greyhorse, Cherry Grove, Dubay, and Croft. Aged 11-14 months in French oak barrels (20% new).
