Failla Wines is a family owned and run business founded by husband and wife team Ehren Jordan and Anne-Marie Failla. They released their first vintage in 1998 under the name Failla-Jordan and subsequently shortened it. Anne Marie runs the business side of the operation, while Ehren, driven by both French training and a love for discovering cool-climate growing niches, runs the winemaking. In addition to their 11 acres of fruit on their 81.85 acre estate, the winery also sources from multiple cool-climate vineyards up and down the Sonoma Coast, the Russian River Valley, and Napa. They had a hand in the creation of the newly-formed sub-appellation Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, where their estate is located. The fruit from their estate vineyard grows at a minimum elevation of 1,000 feet, keeping the grapes just above the fog level (preventing them from absorbing too much water and diluting the juice inside). The close proximity to the Pacific Ocean keeps the temperatures relatively low (did we mention Ehren Jordan loves cool climate everything? Their wine club levels are Cool, Cooler, and Coolest), and allows the fruit to maintain its naturally high acid levels. The bunches are whole cluster pressed once they arrive at the winery, then ferment in a combination of concrete, new, and neutral oak; the percentage in each vessel can change every vintage. Ehren and Anne-Marie follow a unique philosophy when it comes to winemaking. They go into each harvest with a game-plan but believe that each year comes with new or different challenges than the one before, and ultimately they let instinct be their guide. This Chardonnay shows off a strong orange pith nose, with a creamy texture and round mouthfeel. Despite the high acidity, the wine presents as balanced, with notes of papaya, ripe banana, citrus juice and toasted marshmallow.
