The Flowers Vineyards were some of the first vines planted on the extreme Sonoma Coast in 1991, just two miles from the rugged outcropping cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. While this may seem like a risky location, the grapes actually greatly benefit. The cool coastal breeze and evening fog help to moderate the temperature in the vineyards, and allows the grapes to have a slower, more gradual ripening - the balance of acid and sugar is always foremost in the winemaker’s mind. This Chardonnay is carefully nurtured in estate vineyards, and hand-harvested in the early morning to preserve the fresh acidity. After being transported to the winery in small baskets, the grapes are pressed and the juice allowed to settle. It is then put directly into French Oak barrels, 1-2 years old, where it undergoes full fermentation and maturation in temperature and humidity-controlled aging rooms. As a result, this wine offers hints of baking spice and vanilla, with a fresh bread dough note coming from the battonage. This only complements and enhances the aromas of lime-blossom and citrus zest, with a bright and precise acidity on the palate.
