Steve and Jill Matthiasson work 7 different and distinct vineyard sites in Napa and Sonoma. They work with well-known varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and lesser known varietals such as Ribolla Gialla; their family’s core value is to create wines that showcase the purity of their varietal, and the individuality of their growing site. To do this, they use the best farming methods suited to each site and vine training that works the best for each varietal. First and foremost, the Matthiassons consider themselves farmers involved in a community, and they strive to create phenomenal fruit while making responsible use of the land. The Michael Mara vineyard is Sonoma Coast, close to the town of Glen Ellen, at the base of the Sonoma mountain range. What makes this Chardonnay unique is the soil in the vineyard - a landslide caused a cascade of rocks and rich volcanic soil to be deposited in the vineyard. Along with the red soil, these aspects leave a distinct core flavor of crushed oyster shell and rock dust. This only complements and enhances the partnership between the white peach and toasted almond flavors natural to Chardonnay. 80% of the fruit is harvested early to ensure it keeps its bright acidity and has enough sugar to produce a moderate level of alcohol. The rest is picked late in the season, to bring rich and bountiful flavors. All are whole cluster pressed, then allowed to settle for 24 hours before going through fermentation in French oak barrels - 2 new, 8 neutral. The wine rests there for 18 months undisturbed.
